Saguilan Decisions Villasana Jr. In Spirited Affair

Nery Saguilan was conquered by the scales on Friday, but managed to overcome the challenge of Marcos Villasana Jr. The free-spirited lightweight earned a 10-round decision over the second generation boxer Saturday evening at

 Centro de Convenciones in Tlalnepantla, México.

Scores were 97-93 across the board in favor of Saguilan, who was forced to work every round but whose physical advantages proved too much for Villasana Jr. to overcome. 

There was debate as to whether or not the scheduled main event would actually happen given the follies that came with fight week. The bout was initially scheduled as a 12-round regional lightweight title fight, but modified as the event drew closer to Friday's weigh-in once it was learned that Saguilan had no chance of making weight.

The show ultimately went on, with Villasana Jr. fighting his heart out, and Saguilan alternating between brawling and clowning. His ring entrances own are a clear indication that the fireplug likes to have fun, complete with full mask which he dons nearly every minute spent not fighting. 

On this particular occasion, he was forced to fight harder than perhaps he liked. The "El Chavo" costume donned for Saturday's ring walk was good for laughs throughout the venue, but it was all business once the bell rang thanks to the determined effort of the opponent in front of him. Villasana Jr. (15-6, 9KOs) went all in with his performance, enough to where he was visibly displeased with only winning three rounds on each of the three scorecards. 

In the end, however, it was the right call. Despite fighting more than a full division above his most effective fighting weight, Saguilan picks up his sixth consecutive win as he advances to 32-4-1 (11KOs).
