Ryan Farrag has teamed up with a new trainer ahead of his ring return.
The Liverpool man, 29, who won English and European honours at bantamweight but has lost two of his last three, has been out of the ring since last October.
Farrag was outpointed by Ryan Burnett in a challenge for the Ulsterman’s British title, at the ECHO Arena, and has since decided to move weight.
Shortly after his defeat at the hands of unbeaten talent Burnett, Farrag outlined his intention to drop to super-flyweight.
And that move was confirmed by new trainer Danny Vaughan, who told Boxing Scene on Tuesday that the pair would be working together and campaigning in the 115lb division.
Farrag revealed on March 4 that he was looking for a new trainer after saying he feels “it’s time for me to move on” from Paul and Mick Stevenson at the Everton Red Triangle.
He then took to social media to rubberstamp the link-up with Vaughan, the former trainer of now-retired Derry Mathews, insisting he is “looking forward to a massive year.”
Farrag, after teaming up with Vaughan, will be based in Marbella and will train out of the MTK Marbella gym, which is the base of the Puerto Banus management outfit with whom the 16-3 (4 KOs) man has a deal.
He will undoubtedly be targeting major honours in his first 12 months under the tutelage of Vaughan and a potential showdown with the winner of the vacant British super-flyweight title clash between Charlie Edwards and Iain Butcher, which takes places on April 15 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports, would be a good first step on the ladder.
Details regarding Farrag’s ring return –– and his first fight under Danny Vaughan –– will be revealed in due course.
In other news, Sam Maxwell will return to the ring on April 22, live and exclusive on BoxNation and BT Sport.
Maxwell (1-0) has yet to improve on his points win on his debut back in October, but he will get the chance to do just that when he boxes at Leicester Arena, as part of the undercard to Tommy Langford’s vacant WBO interim middleweight world title showdown against Avtandil Khurtsidze.
And Craig Glover will come back from his first defeat on the same night.
The Liverpool cruiserweight (2-1) was outpointed by debutant Jake Bonnalie on March 4, at the O2 Arena in London, as part of the undercard to Tony Bellew’s heavyweight victory over David Haye, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
But he will be handed the opportunity to get back on the horse under the tutelage of new trainer –– and former world title challenger –– Derry Mathews at the ECHO Arena in his home city on April 22. The fight will take place on a Sky Sports aired-bill which is topped by Glover’s former gym-mate Martin Murray in a mouth-watering middleweight match-up against Gabriel Rosado.
