The last time former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. was seen in the ring, he was brutally knocked out cold by former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli last December in Moscow, Russia.
On Sunday, Jones will take part in a unique internet pay-per-view in Arizona, where a fan with no pro boxing experience was selected to fight him in the ring. The man selected is 33-year-old former amateur boxer and MMA fighter Vyron Phillips from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Phillips stands to win $100,000 if he beat Jones.
According to Jones, he didn't want to fight Maccarinelli unless it was for a world title and that's what was promised to him.
When the fight was first announced by Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov, it was announced for the vacant WBA cruiserweight title. The WBA quickly issued a press release which denied the information.
Jones, 47-years-old, never specifies the reasons, but says he was unable to get himself out of the deal when it became apparent that he wasn't going to fight for a world title.
"The thing in Russia was, basically, I wanted to fight for a title, but at the same time, I didn't want to fight [Maccarinelli] if I wasn't fighting him for a title. It didn't really make sense. Sometimes when you get into things, promoters do certain things, and you get stuck," Jones said to CBS Sports.
"To me, what I felt like I went through in Russia was a no-win situation, because I didn't want to fight Maccarinelli unless we were fighting for a title. That's cause he has everything to gain and nothing to lose, and I have nothing to gain unless I'm fighting for the title. And that's kind of what happened."
