Featherweight contender Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard has pulled out of his Aug. 13 Top Rank Live co-feature against Aaron “Gavilan” Garcia, according to Garcia’s manager and trainer, Vince Parra.
“I got a call yesterday from Brad Goodman saying that Remillard wasn’t fighting anymore,” Parra said. “There were a couple guys on the table to try to salvage the fight, and we’re still looking at options.”
The 25-year-old Remillard (23-1, 13 KOs) of Hartford, Conn., is coming off his first career loss in March, a tenth round stoppage to Mikey Garcia on HBO for the NABF/NABO 126-pound titles.
“As far as a reason why he pulled out, all I’ve been hearing is that Remillard has been going through some legal problems from some local incident over there,” Parra added.
Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Aaron Garcia (10-2-2, 2 KOs) of Vista, Calif., a former top-ranked American amateur at 119 and 125 lbs., has been matched tough off a two-year hiatus. After shocking 20-1 Alejandro Lopez in February, he was edged out by 13-0 Abraham Lopez (no relation) in April in a majority decision that many including this writer thought Garcia had won by a slim margin.
Ironically, Alejandro Lopez fights on the Aug. 13 main event against unbeaten super bantamweight up-and-comer Teon Kennedy.
Fox Sports Net will broadcast the card.
