Promoter Paco Damian has a knack for finding hidden gems. He’s optimistic that his latest protege can be polished into the diamond of his roster.

Daniel Lugo, Damian’s fighter, is set to take on Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez in a junior lightweight bout Saturday in Aguascalientes, Mexico, which will headline a DAZN streamed broadcast.

Lugo (27-2-1, 18 KOs) is coming off a draw to former world titleholder Mauricio Lara, while Hernandez (34-2, 31 KOs) hasn’t fought since being stopped by current WBC junior lightweight champion O’Shaquie Foster in the 12th and final round of their dramatic matchup last October. Although no title shot is on the line, fight implications could alter the winner’s title opportunities – especially with Hernandez currently ranked No. 4 by the WBC.

“I think this is the opportunity of his life,” Damian told BoxingScene of the 29-year-old Lugo.

Damian was quick to point out that the 26-year-old Hernandez is a tough opponent. Before being stopped by Foster, he was winning on the scorecards. Hernandez is known for his one-punch knockout power, and he represents a step up in competition for Lugo after Lara, who looked uninspired in their bout.

“We have to give a lot of credit to Hernandez,” Damian said. “He is a very good fighter, can box and punch with both hands.”

Damian believes Lugo may be no more than a step away from much bigger things yet.

“If he wins, I think that puts him in line for a world title,” Damian said.
