Breidis Prescott promised a fan-friendly slugfest Saturday night, when he’ll try to knock off another undefeated contender.
The hard-hitting Prescott (24-3, 19 KOs) suspects unbeaten Mike Alvarado (31-0, 22 KOs) hasn’t encountered anyone quite like him in any of Alvarado’s first 31 professional fights.
“There’s one thing I can assure you,” Prescott said Thursday during a press conference in Las Vegas. “Whoever comes to watch [me] fight, you guys are going to get your money’s worth because I always bring the fireworks. Hopefully, Mike Alvarado’s ready for July 4th on November 12th.”
Their 10-round junior welterweight bout will be one of three televised by HBO Pay-Per-View before the main event that’ll match Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs) against Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KOs) a third time at MGM Grand.
The Colombian-born, Miami-based Prescott is just 4-3 since his stunning first-round knockout of previously undefeated Amir Khan three years ago in Manchester, England. But each of those three losses have come by decision — a 10-round split decision against Miguel Vazquez two fights after he conquered Khan, a 12-round unanimous decision to England’s Kevin Mitchell and another 12-round unanimous decision to Northern Ireland’s Paul McCloskey just nine weeks ago in Belfast.
He was credited with knocking down McCloskey (23-1, 12 KOs) in the first round of their WBA elimination match Sept. 10 and hurt him several times more in their fight. But McCloskey won, 114-113, on two scorecards and 115-113 on the other.
Prescott is certain he won that bout, but he and his handlers are just thankful they got another high-profile opportunity so quickly against Alvarado, of Thornton, Colo.
“We’ve had a great camp and we have a great strategy,” said Eufracio Gonzalez, Prescott’s trainer. “I look forward to everyone watching the fight. I’ve studied Mike Alvarado. He’s a great fighter. He’s 31-0, he’s been matched great and we look forward to exploiting his flaws.”
