This past Saturday night at the Oasis Hotel Complex in Cancun, Mexico - the boxing world witnessed a sure contender for "upset of the year" - as unknown Mexican hard-hitter Sergio Thompson (22-2, 20KOs) stopped "El Nino De Oro" Jorge Linares (31-3, 20KOs) in two rounds. Linares was returning for the first time since last October's TKO loss to Antonio DeMarco. Linares already had July rematch scheduled with WBC lightweight champion DeMarco in Los Angeles, but now Thompson is in line for the shot.

Thompson came out as promised, throwing big shots from the opening round and caught the former champion with several hard shots. In the second, Linares was stunned by several punches and went down. Linares beat the count, but a serious cut opened up above the left eye and the ringside doctor stopped the fight.
