MGM Grand Conference Center - In a super bantamweight fight, Mike Plania (24-1, 12 KOs) scored two knockdowns and won a ten round majority decision over Joshua Greer (22-2-1, 12 KOs), who is the top rated contender under the WBO at bantamweight. (photos by Mikey Williams/Top Rank)
The scores were 94-94, 96-92 and 97-91.
Greer started at the distance in the first, walking around and taking his time, but Plania decked him with a hard left hand. Plania continued to show he was the stronger man and was landing good counters.
Greer went back to boxing in the second, staying away and throwing fast shots. He continued the same pace in the third, as Plania was being patient and looking for a big shot. Not much activity from Greer in the fourth. Plania had the edge in the fifth, with Greer not throwing enough and mostly on the move.
Plania was targeting the body in the sixth and landing solid punches. At the end of that round, another counter dropped Greer. At the start of the seventh, Greer came out firing, looking to change the tide. Plania was landing the harder punches, especially with hooks to the body.
They began trading punches at close range on the inside in the eight. Greer was landing and throwing a lot of punches. In the ninth, Greer was coming forward on what may have been a tired Plania, who wasn't throwing a lot and was eating more shots. The scenario was similar in the tenth, with Greer looking to do as much damage as possible and Plania firing back, but also looking tired.
