Mexico's Miguel "Alacran" Berchelt saw his dream fulfilled by successfully defending his WBC super featherweight title by knocking out, at 2:43 seconds of the third round, late-replacement Maxwell Awuku in the main bout at the Oasis Arena in his native Cancun.
The public was overjoyed with Berchelt (33-1, 29 KOs), who was powerful and accurate in combat.
This was the second defense of the title that Berchelt won in January 2017, which improved his record to 33-1, 29 by way of the knockout, while the African challenger was left with a tally of 44-4-1, 30 knockouts.
Miguel faced a dangerous opponent, so in the early moments he was cautious, used his jab, controlled the African and sought to connect with the right.
Awuku, who threw some punches without the necessary aim, repeatedly failed to land. The champion dodged the blows and looked skillful in the ring, but the champion did not despair, was patient and at the right time hurt the challenger.
It was in the third roll when Miguel threw a powerful right straight that crashed into the face of Awuku, who went down to the mat, but stood up to continue in the battle.
"Alacrán" knew that it was the right moment and he was determined to do everything, with a shower of punches coming down and the challenger went to the canvas for the second time.
Once again he got up, but Berchelt did not miss the moment and with hooks, uppercuts and straight punches to finish him off - as the Panamanian referee Héctor Afu intervened.
"I feel very happy, satisfied, it's a very special night for me, I fulfilled a dream that I had since I was a child," said Miguel, cheered since his arrival.
Jaime Munguia, the boxer from Tijuana, was crowned the new Latin American super welter champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC) after knocking out in the third round the Argentine fighter José Carlos Paz with a wild hook to the body.
In the co-main event of the evening at the Oasis Arena Cancun, Munguia ended the fight at 2:59 minutes of the third round, after a lethal hook to the liver.
With this result, Munguia improved his unbeaten record to 27-0, 23 by way of the knockout, and remains a solid prospect, while the opponent was left with a record of 21-7-1, 12 knockouts.
