Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York - In a WBC super middleweight eliminator between former world champions, Caleb Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) scored a one-punch knockout of Anthony Dirrell (34-3-2, 25 KOs) at the end of the ninth round. (photos by Stephanie Trapp)
It was a technical boxing match in the first, with Plant being more accurate and aggressive. They were trading more in the second. Plant was still more accurate and active with his punches. Plant continued to outbox Dirrell in the third and fourth. Dirrell did better in the fifth when he got more aggressive in spots. The sixth was a close boxing match that could have gone either way.
In the seventh, Plant outboxed Dirrell as they were looking to match each other. And Plant continued to box and move during the eight. Dirrell was unloading at the start of the ninth, with Plant weathering the storm and going back to boxing. At the end of the round, Plant scored a big left hook that put Dirrell down and out - ending the fight quickly as ringside doctors entered the ring to tend to Dirrell.
