MGM Grand Conference Center, Las Vegas - In a featherweight contest, Adam Lopez (14-2, 6 KOs) won a ten round majority decision over Louie Coria (12-3, 7 KOs). The scores were 95-95, 96-94 Lopez, 96-94 for Lopez. (photos by Mikey Williams)
It was a battle of veteran trainers, as Buddy McGirt handles Lopez and Robert Garcia works with Louie Coria.
Lopez was coming off an impressive losing effort against Oscar Valdez in November. He had came in on late notice, dropped Valdez, but was stopped in the seventh.
There were fireworks early on, as Coria came out pressing the action and forced Lopez to trade shots at close range. Coria was throwing a lot of punches and landing often on Lopez, who at times seemed overwhelmed.
Coria continued his level of activity in the second. The pace eased down in the third, as Lopez was using quick jabs from the distance and continued that strategy in the fourth as Coria was looking to get inside to fight. The boxing skill of Lopez was giving him the edge as the rounds played out.
Lopez, who was dealing with two swollen eyes, began to slow down in the final few rounds, with Coria coming on and his workrate making things very close.
