In the immediate aftermath of his disputed victory over Lamont Peterson this past weekend at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, Danny Garcia stated that a rematch between the two would have to take place at 147 pounds. Despite holding major titles as junior welterweights, there was a weight limit of 143 pounds for this contest.
Garcia's demand isn't a problem with Barry Hunter, who trains and manages Peterson, who told krikya360.com:
"Lamont and Danny Garcia could fight at ANY weight between 140 and 147 because when you go with the fight and think about it, and again I take nothing away from Garcia...Danny wasn't the judge, Danny fought the best he could. Nevertheless, I think the wrong guy won and if they were to fight again, I think the outcome would be different," Hunter told BoxingScene.
After 12 rounds, Garcia was ahead on two cards by the score of 115-113, with one tally of 114-114. Peterson used plenty of movement early - some would say he gave away the first half of the fight - before coming on strong in the late stages to dominate the championship rounds.
So has Hunter made it clear to the powers-that-be (i.e.- Al Haymon) that they want an immediate rematch with Garcia?
"We have not had that conversation, yet," said Hunter. "I definitely made mention of it. I thought it was definitely a very, very, entertainig fight. It was a spirited fight, especially down the stretch and I just think that - not only myself - but I think the fans as well, would definitely love to see a rematch of that fight."
When asked if he would want Peterson to attack Garcia earlier in the fight and not be so content to box from the outside, Hunter answered:
"Whichever strategy we deem to be the best for the rematch, that's what we'll go with."But he did admit that he had not seen the broadcast of the fight just yet and would make adjustments based off his observations. Regardless, they want an immediate rematch. Definitely, I think that is a fight that the world would like to see again."
