Claressa Shields, the self-proclaimed GWOAT, is now a promoter with the launch of T-Rex Promotions.
Shields faces Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse on July 27 at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena for Lepage-Joanisse’s WBO heavyweight and light heavyweight titles.
Shields (14-0, 2 KOs), 29, of Flint, Michigan, seeks to add another accomplishment to her impressive resume as a two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-division undisputed champion. The first fighter she signed to T-Rex Promotions, lightweight Samantha Worthington (8-0, 6 KOs), 28, of Lexington, Kentucky, will be featured on the undercard.
“I am excited to be working with Claressa on the first fighter we signed together, Samantha Worthington,” Dmitry Salita told BoxingScene. “Samantha was Claressa's teammate in the amateurs and is now a world-rated, undefeated professional who will be fighting on July 27 in Detroit.”
Salita noted that Shields’ ability to promote female fights, given her stature in women’s boxing, opens a new chapter for both the sport and Shields herself. Shields has been a pioneer in expanding boxing's audience, similar to Caitlin Clark's impact on the WNBA.
“This marks a great beginning for Claressa on the business side of the sport, and I look forward to collaborating with her on many fighters in the future,” Salita said. “Claressa has opened the door of opportunity for many and advanced the cause of equality in women’s sports.”
Salita added that Shields has always aimed to promote, especially women boxers struggling for recognition, though Salita told BoxingScene she wants to work with male boxers as well.
“Besides being a champion in the ring, that mission has always been Claressa's goal,” Salita said.
