WBA "regular" super middleweight champion David Morrell is hoping to make a big statement on Saturday night, when he faces Kalvin Henderson in Minneapolis.
The fight will be featured by Showtime, as the televised co-feature to the super bantamweight bout between Stephen Fulton and Danny Roman.
There has been a lot of talk, that Morrell will face big names in the next twelve months - but the Cuban boxer is not overlooking his upcoming foe.
"I'm not underestimating Henderson, I'm just responding to what people are asking. My focus is only on [Henderson] and not another fighter. They ask me about the next fight, but I don't talk about that, just this one. You can't run if you haven't learned to walk. Then we will think about Plant, Benavidez and Canelo," Morrell told George Ebro.
“We are not going to risk everything we have achieved [by rushing things]. In just a second you can lose a fight. After so much work I can't go backwards. I prefer to go in calmly, calmly, always respecting the opponent. Henderson wants the same thing as me in the ring. For now we are walking, there will be a time to run."
The fight will be Morrell's Showtime debut. He wants to impress the president of their sports department, Stephen Espinoza.
“When I saw him, I thanked him for giving me the opportunity to fight for the first time on Showtime. Here we are in the Major Leagues. Now it's time to keep fighting and winning. As I say, I won't stop until I get on pay-per-view. He is giving me the opportunity to show myself and prove to myself that I can go far. What happened before in my career allows me to come to this moment with confidence," Morrell said.
“Patience made the king. You can't rush anything, because everything can go wrong. Watch the Spence and Ugás fight. Yordenis became a champion, fought Manny Pacquiao, grew a lot and finally faced Spence in a match where everyone paid attention. So we will go little by little, until we get the fights that are really interesting to the fans.
"[I want to send a message] that we are ready for new goals that will come. I want it to be a statement to Showtime and a thank you, letting them know they haven't wasted their time with me. Show my team and the Cubans that they can trust me. But above all, send a message to the division that I am here, that they cannot avoid me. I wait for my moment, I'm not in a hurry."
