Steven Lewis continued his ascent towards title level with a convincing victory in his home city.
The Liverpudlian, who is managed by MGM Marbella and promoted by Frank Warren, advanced his record with a points win.
Lewis, now 12-0 (6 KOs), was last in action in June, when he took out Marek Laskowski in the final of eight rounds at the ECHO Arena, exclusively live on BoxNation.
This time, in the more intimate setting of Greenbank Sports academy, as part of MGM Liverpool’s inaugural show in front of a capacity crowd, the 24-year-old was victorious against Bulgarian opposition.
It went the distance of eight rounds, but Lewis was by far the better fighter when up against the game but limited Angel Emilov.
Emilov, who slips to 5-9 (3 KOs) had a point deducted in the penultimate round for use of the head, rallied in the final three minutes but was on the wrong end of a 79-72 scorecard.
Elsewhere, Phil Sutcliffe Jr. scored a disqualification victory.
The 27-year-old Dubliner, who was making his debut under the MGM banner after signing with them last month, was involved in one of the scrappiest affairs for some time.
In with Edvinas Paplauskas of Lithuania, who was disqualified after two minutes and 40 seconds of the fourth and final round for persistent fouling, Sutcliffe Jr. was on top to begin with but was dragged into an unsavoury watch which ended early, with 20 seconds remaining of the fight, on referee Darren Sarginson’s say-so.
‘Sucko Jr.’ is now 11-1, with that win, with eight early, while Puplauskas has lost his even record and has slipped to 3-4 (2 KOs).
John Quigley returned from a two-year-and-three-month hiatus with a win.
The 26-year-old southpaw advanced his record to 14-0 (3 KOs) after referee John Latham called a halt to his fight with Simas Volosinas, who slips to 6-51 (1 KO), at the end of round three.
Volosinas, who was in action a fortnight ago in Birmingham, was cut over both eyes, bleeding profusely and offering nothing in return to Quigley’s burst-like barrages, forcing the third man to end proceedings.
Meanwhile, Ryan Moorhead added another victory to his ever-improving ledger.
The super-featherweight, who suffered a setback early in his career, is now 8-1 with one early after being involved in an entertaining clash.
Moorhead, 28, was in against former Luke Campbell victim Andy Harris and was handed a 59-56 points win after six stanzas.
And Brandon Daord put on a clinical display as he moved to 2-0.
The 19-year-old Everton Red Triangle-trained southpaw, who was successful on his debut in Manchester back in June, was calm under pressure as he comfortably took a 40-36 decision over Stefan Slavchev.
Slavchev, from Bulgaria, is 23 and boxed Daord’s gym-mate Ryan Farrag, who next week challenges Ryan Burnett for the British bantamweight title at Liverpool’s ECHO Arena, live on Sky Sports, five fights ago.
In defeat, he slips to 8-24-1 (11 KOs).
