Floyd Mayweather Jr. continues to live up to his sassy moniker.
The Hall of Fame boxer recently collected yet another high-figure payday on the exhibition circuit, this time coming off a sixth-round stoppage of YouTuber Deji Olatunji Sunday at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.
Afterward, Mayweather was asked to comment on criticism that his propensity for exhibition fights is a sign that he is experiencing financial strain.
“Money” hit back with a catchy credo.
“A lot of time people say, ‘Oh, Floyd have to do exhibitions,’ Mayweather said in a post-fight press conference. “My philosophy is never stop getting it (money).
“Currency over legacy. Currency over legacy.”
Mayweather added, “Believe me, if I don’t ever do another exhibition in my life, I can live a great life.”
Mayweather was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame at Canastota, New York earlier this summer, in an emotional ceremony that saw the multi-division champion tear up during his speech.
Mayweather, a Michigan native who resides in Las Vegas, has had a busy 2022 thus far, the Deji bout being his third exhibition fight of the year.
In September, Mayweather stopped mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura in the second round of a Rizin-promoted bout in Saitama, Japan.
In May, Mayweather traded punches with Don Moore, a former sparring partner, in an eight-round bout in Abu Dhabi.
Last year, Mayweather faced YouTube star Logan Paul at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, in an eight-round exhibition that went the distance. That fight was distributed on Showtime Pay-Per-View.
On Sunday, Mayweather had what appeared to be his easiest exhibition yet. He frequently toyed with Deji, a British social media star and the brother of KSI, but he stepped up the pressure in the pivotal sixth round, where a barrage of punches from the famed boxer compelled referee Kenny Bayless to call a halt to the fight. Mayweather, however, did sport a minor shiner below his left eye. Afterward, Deji bragged on social media that “I gave Floyd a black eye.”
Mayweather reportedly made as much as $30 million for the Deji fight.
