Arena VFG, Guadalajara, Mexico - Mexico City based Light heavyweight prospect Marco Antonio Periban won a unanimous decison against tough as nails Alfredo Contreras.
Undefeated Marco Antonio (13-0, 10 KO's) looked set to make it a quick night's work, decking Northerner Alfredo from Los Mochis, Sinaloa (11-10, 5 KO's) with a short clipping right hand in round one. It was mostly one way traffic until round six when Marco started to tire, and defiant Alfredo briefly gave him a torried, backing him into the ropes and finally landing some telling combinations.
The earlier pep had left Marco's fists and he drew a roar of anger from the crowd, clearly wacking Alfredo well after the bell for the end of round seven. Guided by sage veteran trainer Al Stankie in his corner, Marco's nose was leaking blood, but he made amends in the final round, snapping his opponent's head back with a peach of a right hook, and drove him back with a torrent of punches. But the Sinaloan showed mettle to make it to the bell, in the oven like heat.
Sergio "Cuatito" Villanueva captured the World Youth featherweight championship of the World Boxing Council (WBC) by winning a ten round unanimous decision over Colombia's Onalvi Sierra. Villanueva (19-1-2, 12 KOs) landed the better punches and punished Sierra (21-5-1, 18 KOs) to the body. The scores were 98-92, 96-94 and 99-92.
