According to Antonio Lozada, manager of Humberto Soto, a verbal agreement was reached with Golden Boy Promotions to stage a fight with WBA "regular" junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana in 2012. The fight has a good chance of taking place in the first quarter of 2012, says Lozada. Maidana (31-2, 28 KOs) vs. Soto (56-7-2, 33 KOs) would possibly happen sometime in February or March, in the United States, with the most viable venues being in Los Angeles, California, or Las Vegas, Nevada.

"On Tuesday, we discussed a possible fight where Humberto 'Zorrita' Soto will challenge Maidana for the championship in February or March. Maidana has decided to take a break for the remainder of the year and plans to resume training in January, and he would be in a position to fight in February or March, based on what [Golden Boy] matchmaker Eric Gomez told us,' Lozada said.

"It is a very attractive fight. We wanted to fight for the WBC title, but Eric Morales will defend the title against Anthony Crolla in December and after that he has to face the winner of eliminator Olusegun Ajose, so we would have to wait a long time. That's why we spoke to Golden Boy about a possible fight against Maidana. All that remains is for Golden Boy to balance the televison dates with HBO and Televisa, and then advise us of the final date and venue."
