WBA "regular" Super Lightweight champion Marcos Maidana is currently in his native Argentina while waiting for news about his next fight. Various names have been thrown around in the last few weeks for what is going to be Maidana’s return to the United States.
The likes of Erik Morales, Amr Khan, Humberto Soto, Victor Ortiz, Andre Berto, Timothy Bradley and even Floyd Mayweather were mentioned as possible candidates to face Maidana who is becoming one of the most feared boxerss in the industry. At least that is what reality shows us, as no one has stepped up so far. Except for one boxer - Paulie Malignaggi, who called out “El Chino” two days ago via Twitter.
“Since the (Robert) Guerrero fight fell through last August I went back to Argentina and defended my (WBA Super Lightweight) title against the Russian (Petr) Petrov, whom I knocked out in four. It was great to fight before 7,000 Argentinean fans and in my own neighborhood. These days I am coming back from a vacation in my native Santa Fe with my family, and I started to train for the next challenge,” Maidana said about his current situation.
“I don’t want to talk any more about Khan and Morales. They are both liars. They have a million excuses in stock when it comes to talking about a rematch with me. Khan keeps running as if the first fight (last December) was an easy one for him. And Morales shouted that he had been robbed (last April) but next thing I knew I was offered little money to fight him again. Then, I challenged Morales to fight in December or February and he started saying he would move down in weight or fight Mayweather. I know Morales is fearless but on this one he lied because he doesn’t want to get it on with me again,” “El Chino” continued.
“My advisor (Sebastian Contursi) had a meeting in person with [Golden Boy CEO] Richard Schaefer a few weeks back in L.A. and we are still waiting for news regarding what my next fight will be. We agreed that I would have a big fight in February in the US. And two days ago Paulie Malignaggi called me out. Obviously, I accepted the challenge because I fear nobody. Unlike others who call themselves kings and all that s**t, Malignaggi has balls and proved that he wants to fight. He has done so before by taking on fighters like Cotto, Hatton and Juan Diaz. I would like to fight Malignaggi. I think it would be a great fight. Yet we have to wait for Golden Boy Promotions to see if they make it happen,” Maidana added.
