Luke Campbell dazzled his way back to victory –– and added a belt to his cabinet to boot.
The former WBC International lightweight champion, who was coming back from a defeat to Yvan Mendy last December, won the vacant Commonwealth crown at the Sheffield Arena, live on Sky Sports.
Campbell, now 13-1 (11 KOs), looked sensational as he stopped Gary Sykes inside two rounds as part of the undercard to Kell Brook’s bid to retain his IBF welterweight title against mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier of Canada.
‘Cool Hand’, 29, impressed the watching crowd against ‘Five Star’, the former British super featherweight champion, in their Battle of Yorkshire in what was his first win under new trainer Jorge Rubio.
Bigger fights and bigger nights await Campbell, who showed no signs of a hangover from the defeat at the hands of Frenchman Mendy, live on Sky Sports Box Office, last time out.
After the fight, he told Sky Sports: “I needed to be at my best tonight. I treat every fight as must win. This is me getting in feeling 100 per cent.”
“Last time, I wasn't fully right,” Campbell continued, “[but] tonight, I performed against a great fighter and it's onwards and upwards for now.
“It's a lot of sacrifice because I'm a family man. I took myself away and this is no game we're playing.
“My family supported me [and] I'm proud to have this belt.”
With Campbell now the Commonwealth champ, it is only natural that the British title is on the hit-list, as well as a potential return against the aforementioned Mendy.
Campbell said: "Mendy is on my hit list. I can't wait to get in there with him but why not pick up the British title now?
“No disrespect to Scott [Cardle] but he's got a belt and I want it."
Elsewhere, Adam Etches continued the rebuilding job against Zoltan Sera with a four-round stoppage win.
The former IBF Inter-Continental middleweight champion, who is back under the tutelage of Dominic Ingle and moved to 20-1 (17), ended the challenge of the Hungarian visitor in systematic fashion.
Etches, 25, will be looking now to get back into title contention after that win and, having gone away and dealt with his deficiencies, he’s learnt from his mistakes since the devastating defeat to ‘Brit Basher’ Sergey Khomitsky last March.
Sera, who had been to these shores twice before and lost to Liverpool duo Liam Smith and Joe Selkirk, deserved credit for how game he was, but he was ultimately outclassed by the better fighter and slipped to 22-8 (13).
And Dean Byrne (18-6-2, 6 KOs) rolled back the years to grab a decision win over Jamie Robinson.
Byrne, whose ring moniker is ‘Irish Lightning’, has said that “this is only the start” of the journey after claiming his first victory in six fights against the ‘Ginger Rocket Jr.’, who has slipped to 6-4-1 (2) with defeat, on points by a margin of 58 points to 57.
