The Los Angeles Matadors defeated the Mexico City Guerreros winning four out of five matches on Friday night. The Matadors have now won 19 of the 25 bouts they've competed in as a team and are now 2-0 against the Guerreros.
Now through five weeks of the inaugural WSB season, the LA Matadors lead the conference standings with a 4-1 team record, and 13 points overall. With the loss, the Guerreros now fall to third place with a 2-3 record and sit behind the Miami Gallos (3-2), who defeated the Memphis Force (1-4) earlier this week. The current standings now sets up another battle between the league's top two teams next week as the Matadors will host the Gallos in Los Angeles January 13.
Tonight in Mexico City, Everton Lopes (Salvador de Bahia, Brazil), solidified his No. 1 WSB ranking in the lightweight division by handling the Guerreros' Juan Romero (Mexico City, Mexico). Lopes is now 3-0 on the season. Entering this week, he was tied with another Matador lightweight Eric Fowler (Houston, Texas) for the top spot in the WSB rankings. Fowler will have the chance next week against Miami to keep pace with Lopes.
Lopes wasn't the only impressive Matador on display Friday, as three other LA fighters earned victories over previous undefeated Guerrero opponents including Carlos Gongora 2-0 (Tene Napo, Ecuador), Vyacheslav Shabranskij 2-0 (Kiev, Ukraine), and David Imoesiri 2-1 (Long Beach, Calif.).
The lone victory for Mexico City came in the bantamweight/54 kg/119 pound weight division as the Los Angeles Matadors were unable to provide a boxer for this weight class.
The Matadors next home bout is Jan. 13 at Nokia Theatre at LA Live as they look to avenge their first and only loss of the season against the Miami Gallos. They will host the Gallos a second time on Jan. 27 at Nokia Theatre. Tickets, starting at $20, can be purchased by visiting or calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000.
