New York, New York - When people think of IBO/IBF/WBA middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, many associate power as his primary asset. On Saturday night he showed an excellent jab, which controlled Lemieux and with that he won the distance battle with by not allowing the Canadian puncher to land many power shots.

The managing director of K2 Promotions, Tom Loeffler, says GGG couldn’t take as many chances as he’s done in the past with a fighter like Lemieux.

“Gennady was much more tentative in this fight than others,” Loeffler told krikya360.com “He wasn’t putting himself in position to take shots like he did against Geale or Monroe. I was surprised that Lemieux took as many shots. He wears people down. He got Lemieux with a lot of body shots.”

Loeffler said Golovkin is more than a power puncher and his performance on Saturday proves so.

“Gennady threw allot of very effective jabs and I would bet the punch stats show a very high connect rate,” explained the promoter. “That was the key to controlling Lemieux and stop him from winding up with his power punches. He always kept Lemieux guessing with the jab and he had a very effective uppercut but the jab was the key. Whenever he perceives a challenge, he raises his game to a different level. He couldn’t get carless with Lemieux.”

Both fighters also went VADA testing for four weeks and it’s something Golovkin and his team would like to continue.

“Abel (Sanchez) has always been in support of the testing. They weren’t obligated to do it as I said but the WBC suggested it. When I discussed it with Golden Boy, they liked the idea so we moved forward with it.”
