Liam Davies carried over his newfound power surge into his latest title defense.
The unbeaten Brit overcame a flash knockdown to score two of his own en route to a fifth round stoppage of Italy’s Vincenzo La Femina. A barrage of punches left La Femina defenseless forced referee Fabian Guggenheim to stop the contest at 2:50 of round five in their TNT Sports/ESPN+ televised battle Saturday at AO Arena in Manchester, England.
Telford’s Davies jump out to a quick start in the second defense of his EBU junior featherweight title fight. La Femina stood directly in front of Davies but was consistently beaten to the punch in the early rounds.
Both boxers touched the canvas in an entertaining third round. La Femina was rocked early in the frame and forced to the canvas. He beat the count and immediately cleared his head to punch his way back into the fight.
An exchange at close quarters saw Davies suffer a brief defensive lapse. La Femina remained in the pocket long enough to connect with a counter left hook to floor the regional favorite late in the round.
Davies returned the favor exactly three minutes later. A slower paced round four—by comparison only—ended with Davies producing the third and final knockdown of the night when he caught La Femina with a left hook just before the bell.
La Femina once again beat the count but seemed out of sorts as he sat on his corner stool between rounds. Davies dialed up the pressure in round five, never more so than in the final 30 seconds. La Femina (13-1, 7KOs) was pinned along the ropes as Davies unloaded with power shots until it was determined the visiting Italian was no longer able to defend himself.
The win marked the second straight stoppage for Davies (15-0, 7KOs), who knocked out Jason Cunningham in the first round of their July 29 meeting in his Telford hometown. Saturday marked the second defense of the EBU title he claimed in a twelve-round win over Ionut Balulta exactly 52 weeks ago also in Telford.
Davies-La Femina was part of Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren’s ‘Magnificent 7’ show.
