Lee McAllister a.k.a. the Aberdeen Assassin grasped the Commonwealth lightweight title in no uncertain fashion at the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen, on Friday night, when he stopped Ghanaian Godfriend Sowah in 1:43 of round three.
This was as emphatic a display from McAllister as his fans will have seen, since the right hook which put Sowah down for the mandatory count left referee Marcus McDonnell of Twickenham with no alternative but to stop the bout, as the Ghanaian was in no position to continue despite beating the count at eight.
A tentative opening from the pair of them saw McAllister, now 29-2 (6KOs), scoring regularly with his jab, and little offensive work from Sowah, 11-4 (4KOs). The Ghanaian seemed content to use his left arm merely to fend off the Aberdonian, before resorting to fairly wild and inaccurate swings with his right, this left him open to the right cross/hook, and it was this that pole-axed him in the third.
On the undercard Muirkirk’s Joe Kelso, 1-1 (1KOs), was stopped in round two of his bout against short notice opponent, and debutant, Leon Deans of Derby. The stoppage incurred by a clash of heads, which left the Ayrshire man with a horrendous cut over his left eye. The severity of the cut will mean an extended period out of boxing for the new professional.
Tommy Gilmour’s new signing from Barnsley, Josh Wale, now 7-1 (3KOs), was in devastating form as he dismantled Bulgarian Vladimir Borov, 17-55-1 (7KOs), in clinical fashion, forcing referee Richie Davies to call a halt at the half way stage of round four.
