This past Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, WBA/IBO junior middleweight world champion Erislandy 'The American Dream' Lara (23-2-2, 13KOs) successfully defended his titles with a hard-fought twelve round unanimous decision over Vanes "The Nightmare" Martirosyan.
The fight was a rematch of their 2012 encounter, which ended in a nine round technical draw.
Showtime's Steve Farhood, who was unofficially scoring the fight from ringside, explained why Lara is such a difficult fighter to overcome.
"He's so selective with his punches, yet he lands such a high percentage of them," Farhood said. "Lara did what Lara does. Martirosyan fought about as well as he could. The difference was Lara's accuracy and ring generalship. I think Martirosyan's competitiveness made it a good fight."
Moving forward, Lara wants the biggest names available - and the one fighter he's eager to challenge is WBC/IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
The Cuban champion has been demanding a fight with Golovkin since the early part of 2015.
Golovkin's team is still attempting to reach a deal for a fall showdown with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - but Lara is confident the Mexican superstar will never face the feared puncher.
Lara believes his defensive skills and his ring intelligence is more than enough to beat Golovkin.
"I've never seen him in [the ring] with anybody like me. I will beat Golovkin with a lot of intelligence. I'm used to fighting fighters like Golovkin and I will beat him with intelligence," Lara told krikya360.com.
BoxingScene asked Lara if he had a direct message that he wanted Golovkin to hear - and he voiced his desire to sit down with GGG to negotiate the terms.
"Golovkin must have seen this fight [with Vanes]. I've called you out a couple of times. Let's make this fight. We just need to sit down and make these negotiations," Lara said.
