Super middleweight prospect Kevin Newman (10-1-1) returns to the ring on Friday night in what will be the biggest fight of his career to date. Across the ring from him will be Mark Anthony Hernandez (14-2-1). The bout takes place at Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall and will be broadcast as part of a ShoBox quadruple header on Showtime.
The Mayweather Promotions' fighter had excellent sparring for this camp and believes that his hard will show on November 1st.
"Training camp was great. I started off sparring with Anthony Dirrell. I did 3 weeks with him before he fought Jose Benavidez. That got me really sharp right from the beginning. I also sparred with Ronald Gavril and Lonnie B (Lionel Thompson). I had really good preparation," Newman stated.
This fight has added meaning for Newman. The 27-year-old first faced Hernandez in August on the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor undercard. He would lose a unanimous decision and wants nothing more than to get revenge.
He said that when Hernandez's name was brought up he didn't hesitate in accepting him.
"So what happened was obviously you get opponents mentioned and I knew that this was on ShoBox so his name came up and they asked if I wanted the fight and I said lets run it back," Newman explained. "As a competitor you want it back especially when you weren't at 100% the first time. That void wasn't filled. I was getting fights but I wasn't satisfied so that's why I asked for this fight."
In addition to revenge, Newman has long term goals that he is trying to accomplish. A win over Hernandez will move him a step closer to those goals.
"A win will help me move up the rankings and continue to move forward but I always focus on the guy in front of me. As long as I win I will keep going forward," Newman said.
Newman also plans on showing everyone that he has improved a lot since their first fight.
"This will finish off my year. I want to end this year with a bang and what better way to do that than with this fight here that I have wanted for so long. I have grown so much more since that first fight both mentally and physically. I have seen some video on him and he is doing a lot of the same things. Just tune in on Friday. You are going to see a great fight," Newman told krikya360.com.
