Former world title challenger Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson has announced that he is a promotional free agent. Johnson, a resident of Atlanta, GA, via Asbury Park, NJ, was most recently promoted by New York based Star Boxing.
Johnson has compiled a professional record of 25-1-1 and is coming off of three consecutive wins, 2 of them by KO in the first 3 rounds. His only loss as a professional was a 12 round decision loss to Vitali Klitschko nearly 2 years ago. "My fight against Vitali opened my eyes to the politics of the sport and I’ve learned a lot about the business side of boxing since then”, said Johnson. “I seem to have gotten lost in the shuffle as a new flavor of the month heavyweight emerges and gets smacked back down to place by the Klitchko brothers.”
Johnson is excited about being a free agent and is looking forward to getting back in the ring as quickly as possible. "I am still the best American heavyweight and one of the top 5 heavyweights in the world period and everybody knows it," said Johnson. “Everyone from Seth Mitchell, Odlanier Solis, Michael Grant, Tony Thompson, David Haye, Alexander Povetkin, Franklin Lawrence and Chris Areola has turned down opportunities to fight me over the last two years.”
Johnson, who is represented by Newark, NJ, based Tandem Sports, says that he is now exploring a number of potential opportunities across the globe including, a fight against newly crowned WBF heavyweight champion Michael Grant in South Africa, but says that he has “nothing scheduled and is open to listening to all fight or promotional opportunities.”
