Evan Holyfield had the rudest awakening of his nascent professional career.

In a stunner, unheralded, Missouri-based journeyman Jurmain McDonald stopped the highly regarded Holyfield, the son of Evander Holyfield, in the second round of six-round junior middleweight contest on the Sergey Kovalev-Tervel Pulev Triller Fight Club undercard Saturday night at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.

In the second round, McDonald unloaded an overhand right that dropped Holyfield face first on the canvas. Referee administered a count before waiving the fight off as Holyfield struggled to get to his feet.

The previously undefeated Holyfield, a huge betting odds favorite, was expected to dispatch McDonald with relative ease. Holyfield, a native of Atlanta, made his professional debut in 2019 to much promising acclaim.

The 24-year-old, whose record now stands at nine wins against lone loss, with six knockouts, breezed through the majority of his opposition for much of his professional career.

The knockout marked the most impressive win for the 32-year-old McDonald, who improves to 7-5, with 3 knockouts.

In the previous bout, Fernando Vargas Jr., the oldest son of former two-division titleholder Fernando Vargas, kept his undefeated record intact with a crushing first-round stoppage of Terrance Jarmon in a junior middleweight bout set for six rounds.

The official time was 0:36 of the opening round.

The hard-punching southpaw dropped Jarmon three times, all courtesy of his left hand.

The first knockdown occurred when Jarmon was on the ropes; Vargas connected on a straight left that bounced off Jarmon's forehead.

The second knockdown was from a looping left that connected around the left ear of Jarmon.

The third knockdown came from a straight left down the pipe that forced Jarmon to drop to his knee. Jarmon shook his head as the referee called a halt to the bout.

Vargas Jr. improves to 6-0, with 6 KOs.

In the preceding bout, lightweight prospect Amado Vargas, the middle son of Fernando Vargas, notched a unanimous decision over Anel Dudo in a four-round junior lightweight bout.

All three judges scored the bout 39-36 for the 21-year-old Vargas.

Vargas improves to 4-0, with 2 KOs.
