Joseph ‘Mack’ Williams is one of the hidden gems of the New York fight scene. Williams was a dominant amateur, winning Golden Gloves and National titles at heavyweight and was an alternate in the 2012 Olympics in London.
‘Mack’ has now linked up with New York mainstay Andre Rozier as he looks to build on his 14-0 record, which has seen him pick up 11 stoppages in the process. Williams discussed his link up with Rozier and his professional career so far.
The Far Rockaway native said, “I’ve done well in the professionals so far, but I have always been boxing around the light heavyweight limit when I am a super middleweight in reality. I have been knocking people out at light heavyweight and I know I am going to carry the power down. I believe I have all the ingredients to reach the top in the sport of boxing.
“Andre Rozier has been a great addition not just to my boxing career but my life. He is a great man and I believe with the power I possess, and the skill set we work on every day in the gym with Andre and the team, these are the necessities needed for me to become world champion.”
Williams, whose hero is a fighter who also moved through the weight classes in James Toney, will make his super middleweight debut in mid-august and the former amateur standout gave his take on what fight fans can expect from his return to the ring.
The Lou DiBella promoted fighter said, “I am looking to get back in the ring in mid-August and go from there, but what I can say is it’s going to be a far better version of me than anyone has ever seen before.
“I believe that I can be a world champion and I want title fights before the year is out. I want to get to a level where I can be on the verge of world title fights by the end of 2020. I believe that is a realistic ambition of mine. I was an elite level amateur, I beat fighters like Andrew Tabiti and I believe I am going to emulate my amateur success in the pro ranks and even supersede them.”
