All of this talk of David Benavidez being some unbeatable fighter is spurious according to David Morrell. Sure Benavidez is good, but the best 168-pounder on the planet? Morrell will curse out anyone who believes that claim is even remotely true.
This past Saturday, at The Armory in Minnesota, Morrell is convinced that the world saw the best super middleweight around. In the main event slot, Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs) made it look incredibly easy against Sena Agbeko, stopping him in just two rounds.
Jose Benavidez Sr., the father and trainer of David Benavidez, watched closely as Morrell played with his food before violently taking him out. It’s been the same ole pattern for Morrell. His handlers have thrown him in with opponents you’ve barely heard of and the flashy Cuban then goes out and pulverizes them.
It’s a good way to build up his record, but Jose isn’t impressed. If Morrell wants to take his career to the next level, he needs a massive upgrade in competition.
“I think David Morrell is a great fighter,” admitted Jose to krikya360.com. “But I think they should put him in against guys that are known that are going to take him to deep waters and see what he does.”
So far, Morrell hasn’t shown much interest in taking the slow and boring route up the ladder. Instead, he’s waiting for the elevator to speed and take him directly to David Benavidez. Jose doesn’t have a problem with tossing his son into the ring with the highly skilled Cuban. But from strictly a developmental standpoint, there are a ton of names Morrell could fight in order to test himself before making the leap to the top of the division.
“We’ll fight him right now but I think he should fight a Caleb Plant, an Anthony Dirrell, or even a Boo Boo Andrade.”
