Joet Gonzalez made weight on his second attempt Thursday for his third featherweight title shot in less than four years.
Gonzalez got on the scale at 126 pounds even, the featherweight limit, for his fight against Luis Alberto Lopez on Friday night. They’re scheduled to box for Lopez’s IBF featherweight title in a 12-round, 126-pound main event ESPN will televise from American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Gonzalez initially weighed in at 126.4 pounds.
Lopez came in well under the featherweight limit, 125.2 pounds, for his second defense of an IBF belt he won when he beat Josh Warrington by majority decision last December 10 in Warrington’s hometown of Leeds, England.
Gonzalez, 29, was given two hours in accordance with the Texas Combative Sports Program’s rules to return to its scale on weight. If he had failed to get down to 126 pounds or lower, their fight would’ve proceeded as planned, but Gonzalez wouldn’t have been eligible to win the IBF featherweight championship from Lopez.
The 30-year-old Lopez (28-2, 16 KOs), of Mexicali, Mexico, is listed by most sportsbooks as at least a 7-1 favorite to beat Gonzalez (26-3, 15 KOs), of Glendora, California. Gonzalez lost lopsided decisions to Shakur Stevenson (20-0, 10 KOs) and Emanuel Navarrete (38-1, 31 KOs) in his first two 12-round featherweight title fights.
The official weights for the eight bouts on the Lopez-Gonzalez undercard are listed below.
