Last month, Daniel Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) challenged IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Golovkin won a close twelve round decision, with scores of 114-113, 115-112, 115-112.
Jacobs became the first man to take Golovkin the full twelve round distance. The outcome also snapped Golovkin's streak of knockouts - which ended with 23 fights in a row to end inside the distance.
Jacobs does not view the outcome as a defeat. After the contest, Jacobs believes that he did enough to win and he says a lot of fans agree with him.
"We didn't take a loss in this fight," Jacobs told Brian Campbell of CBS Sports. "I think I made a big statement. I think a lot of fans now are willing to follow and support me in my career because they realize that I have what it takes to be one of the best in the world. I competed and a lot of people agree that I even defeated GGG in this bout so people are just excited to see what I have in store for the future and it's a great opportunity for me because this is the place that I always wanted to be."
Jacobs is now looking ahead to a very lucrative middleweight division. Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - who brings a lot of money to the table - is going to compete as a middleweight in the near future.
"We are still going to have some big matches in the future with let's say Canelo, Chavez and everyone else in the middleweight division," Jacobs said. "At the end of the day, I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for me. I would love to face any one of those guys but more importantly, stepping back into the ring and pleasing the fans. I can't wait."
