Carson, California- While Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) and his team are content with unifying all of the titles at 160 pounds, many fans are asking the WBA/IBO middleweight champion to move up next year and fight super middleweight king Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs) - if GGG can’t land a fight with Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez. Ward has told the media that he offered a offered a fight to Golovkin with a purse split of 50-50.
According to Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions, that offer wasn’t good and it also came late.
“There have been no official negotiations with Ward,” Loeffler told krikya360.com. “However, the offer that was sent was sent after we had announced our fight with Lemieux.”
Loeffler also indicates that Ward is no longer going to be a 168-pound fighter, and currently all signs are pointing to Ward fighting light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in 2016.
“All indications now is that he’ll move to 175 and fight Kovalev in the future but who knows,” stated Loeffler.
“We’ve always said when we first got to HBO that we wanted to unify the titles. We said we’d move up to 168 for mega events. Fights with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Carl Froch would have been big events and that’s why we were willing to move up and we were willing to go down for a Floyd Mayweather fight before but we always said we wanted unification fights”
As for the offer of 50/50 - right now or next year - Loeffler says it wouldn’t make business sense, because Golovkin is now a bigger name and a bigger ticket seller than Ward.
“If that fight happens in the future it’d be great, but we think he’s going to move up and fight Kovalev. I think Gennady has surpassed him in stardom. It seems less and less likely the fight happens now.”
