Before Mikkel Kessler started his press conference in Copenhagen to announce his comeback, an interested party had made a call to inquire about a potential fight.

According to Danish tabloid Ekstrabladet, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions reached out to Sauerland Event, to discuss the possibility of a clash between Kessler and IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin for a July date in Las Vegas. The fight would obviously have to take place at the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds, although Kessler has stated in several interviews that he might entertain a catch-weight.

The possibility of fighting in July was immidiately shot down, as Kessler needs 4 to 6 months to get into fighting shape. Kessler has a tentative target period of October/November for his next fight and there is interest on his side in facing Golovkin.

Promoter Kalle Sauerland stated:

“To make such a big fight you’ve got to know what television networks are interested. HBO is crazy about Golovkin and Viasat would of course want to showcase such a fight to the Danish audience. This would be a treat to the Danish fans and to fans around the world. This is definitely something we will work on.”

The Danish paper believes Kessler will require a purse of at least $4 million dollars for such a fight.

“Of course I cannot comment on specific numbers when we are not even in a negotiating stage, but it will be expensive to lure Kessler to America. Much more expensive than having the Viking Warrior fight in Denmark,” Sauerland says.
