The manager of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, Oleg Hermann, discussed the circumstances which led Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to reject a proposal to face Golovkin on July 19th in an HBO Pay-Per-View fight, and also the recent challenge coming from WBO champion Peter Quillin.
According to Chavez, he turned down the fight because he didn't want to accept a deal which extended his promotional agreement with Top Rank.
"I think that Chavez Jr. really wanted to fight with Gennady. I'm positive that he made a mistake by refusing to sign a contract to fight with us and extending the contract for two fights with Top Rank. In this battle, he would have earned a lot of money, and before October of 2015 there would still be enough time to conduct two more matches with the new terms proposed by [Top Rank CEO] Bob Arum," Hermann said.
"With respect to Peter Quillin, everyone knows that he loves to perform in front of the camera and make loud statements, working the public. For us, this is nothing more than words. It's one thing to talk about this fight, and it's quite another to sign a contract. It is here where we see what Quillin is actually worth. Needless to say - for our team, especially for Gennady, one of the main and primary tasks is to unify the belts. And we will make every effort to succeed in that."
