BIG BEAR, CA - WBA/IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is in the snow covered mountains of Big Bear, California preparing to defend his titles on Saturday, JANUARY 19 against world ranked challenger “KING” Gabriel Rosado LIVE on HBO Boxing After Dark®, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT, from The Theatre at Madison Square Garden, ‘The Mecca of Boxing.”
Arriving four weeks ago and training under the watchful eye of Abel Sanchez at The Summit Boxing Gym, Golovkin will remain on a steady schedule leading up to his departure to New York City for fight week.
“Gennady came into camp in great shape, he was at 168 when he came in the door” said Sanchez. “We started sparring last Friday, just six rounds to begin with and after Christmas we’ll increase the rounds with multiple sparring partners.”
Evident when they faced off at the media lunch in New York City earlier this month, Rosado is a couple of inches taller and with a much greater reach than Golovkin.
‘”For this fight Gennady agreed to come down from the middleweight limit to accommodate Rosado at a catch weight” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions, “This is unheard for a champion, that’s how much respect Gennady has for Gabriel.”
Continued Sanchez, “We’ll have Gennady at 158 before we leave for New York City for fight week. He’s on a great schedule now, he runs between 3.5 and five miles per day, sparring on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with weight training on Tuesday and Thursday. “
“He works so hard and is very disciplined so he eats what he wants, just no soft drinks. We watched a few rounds of Rosado’s fight with Charles Whitaker but with Gennady as with all of my fighters we don’t spend a lot of time watching tapes. It’s more important that we’re 100% ready in our preparation and make them adapt to what we do.”
“Gennady is excited to be fighting on HBO again and to realize his dream of fighting at Madison Square Garden. “
