Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City - Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) was caught off guard in the first two rounds by the aggressive nature of Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 19 KOs). Broner let his hands go in the third, and then dropped Rees in the fourth and then the fifth. Not long after the second knockdown, Rees' trainer Gary Lockett jumped on the apron and waved the white towel to sign the end of the fight.

There were some who felt Lockett should have allowed Rees to finish out the round and then examine him during the one minute rest period before the sixth. Lockett admits that he had already given Rees two chances in the bout, because he considered stopping the fight as early as the end of the third round and then came close to throwing in the towel at the end of the fourth.

"I wanted to [stop the fight] after four rounds, but Gavin said no way he was quitting," Lockett said. "I also considered stopping it after the third, but Gavin is too proud."

Rees wanted to continue.

"I disagree with my trainer stopping it. I was always going to get back up. I was going to get keep getting up until I got knocked out cold. I disagree with my trainer stopping it. I was always going to get back up," Rees said.
