As previously reported, WBA/IBF junior welterweight champion Amir Khan has made his gym in Bolton available to Manchester trainer Joe Gallagher and his stable of fighters after they were forced to leave their premises in Denton and look for a new base.

"I just wanted to show my support," Khan said. "We are a big family and I've known Joe Gallagher for a long time. I want him to come here, use the gym and make it a home for himself until they find a new place."

Gallagher was grateful for the helping hand from Khan, who he feels has the capability to shock former pound-for-pound king Mayweather.

"At the last premises we were in, the sponsorship stopped so we needed somewhere new," Gallagher said. "I mentioned a little bit in my news column and the same day I had a phone call from Amir's people. They said I could use the facility for as long as I want. It shows Amir hasn't forgotten his roots.

"I think this time next year Mayweather could be there for taking. It is all about timing, and if they do it right I think Amir has a great chance of tipping him. It is a big thing to say, but it is not mission impossible."

One of Gallagher's fighters is John Murray, who was back in training today just over a fortnight on from suffering his first professional defeat, an eighth-round stoppage against Kevin Mitchell in Liverpool.

Murray has seen the way Khan has bounced back so comprehensively after being knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 2008 and the Mancunian hopes he can do something similar.

"I think it was a good performance early doors but that I just started to get a bit too keen," Murray said of the Mitchell loss.

"I thought I was winning the fight up until about round four, but then I thought he was ready to go and I decided to put my foot down on the gas and started taking shots I didn't need to.

"The swelling on my eye came up, Kevin grew in confidence and I started getting more reckless. But fair play to Kevin - he boxed to a plan and it paid off for him. He beat me fair and square.

"I want to get back in the ring as soon as possible.This is just a blip in my career - training here at Amir's, if I can learn from anyone it will be him because he got beaten by Prescott and look how high he is flying at the moment."

Gallagher is confident Murray will get a rematch with Mitchell once the Dagenham fighter has taken on WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios.

"It is definitely going to happen," Gallagher said.

"The public will pay to see it again - I think now Murray-Mitchell is your modern-day Benn-Eubank, and there could be two or three fights which will be brutal."
