In 2021, Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez had an outstanding year of work.

He started off the year by blasting out Avni Yildirim to retain the WBC, WBC super middleweight titles. He returned in the month of May, to claim the WBO title with a stoppage of Billy Joe Saunders. And then had a third fight in November, when he became the undisputed super middleweight champion by capturing the IBF title with a knockout of Caleb Plant.

As the year comes to a close, there are several possibilities for Canelo in his next fight - which he intends to stage in the month of May.

Canelo and his handlers have mentioned the possibility of heading all the way up to cruiserweight to challenge WBC champion Ilunga Makabu.

According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, Canelo's handlers have approached him about the possibility of facing WBC/IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterviev or WBO light heavyweight champion Joe Smith.

Former super middleweight champion, Carl Froch, believes all of the top fighters at light heavyweight are capable of shocking Canelo - and he certainly believes the top guns at cruiserweight would be very dangerous for the Mexican boxer.

"Any of the top fighters at light heavyweight could be a threat to Canelo and certainly at cruiserweight. You never know if Oleksandr Usyk could come back down to cruiserweight, but he's got his eyes on the biggest division in the world, which is heavyweight. But I do think Usyk would beat Canelo. He's too big and too good for him," Froch explained to Sky Sports.

"When Canelo stepped up to light-heavyweight, he picked his opponent wisely in Sergey Kovalev, who is nearing the closing stages of his career. But Artur Beterbiev stands a good chance of beating Canelo in a really good fight. I don't think it will be one-sided, because Beterbiev is a strong light heavyweight, he's the No 1 in the division, and a genuine threat."
