    Speed vs Power

    you've all heard:

    speed kills

    punchers are born, not made

but which trait *****s the other? Is speed a better trait to have? or is Power the way to go?

i think if you have good power and decent handspeed, you could do good with that

There is no be all end all. Bottomline it boils down to the individual.

exactly, A true puncher can take you out, but a technically sound fast guy can box your ears off and be impossible to catch, it goes both ways and comes down to the two fighters and what other attributes they possess.

It's all about momentum. Momentum is essentially mass x velocity (if you disregard friction). For a fighter the important factors are:

            His weight
How much of his weight he can transfer into the punch
            The speed of the punch

Less say for instance a 200lbs fighter can transfer 50% of his weight into the punch at a speed of 30 feet per sec then the momentum of that punch is 3,000 lbs feet per second.

Now if a 150lbs fighter can transfer 60% of his weight into the punch at a speed of 33.3 feet per sec then the momentum of that punch is also 3,000 lbs feet per second.

However the 150lbs fighter would (on paper) have an advantage as he could land his punches faster making them harder to evade. Of course the actual outcome of the fight would depend on the skills and durability of the individuals involved.

It's no coincidence that the fighters with the best KO records mostly fought between middleweight and light heavyweight, it's because they generally have the best balance of speed, weight, and weight transfer.

Think of it this way. Getting hit by a bus travelling at 10mph generates the same concussive force as getting hit by a car traveling at 50mph (although the car would cause more trauma). But it's much easier to see the bus coming and get out of it's way. Unless you are also the size of a bus LOL

neither one is a better trait to have, i think it all comes down to the skill of the fighters involved. personally, i would rather have speed.

Thank you, it is good to finally see someone get the idea behind power power (more importantly concussive force as you said considering its involvement in the actual knockout), and not say it is just some inborn "magic".
