Once upon a time in the mid 80's a rapper by the name Kid Frost came out battling Ice T and others (whom inspired him), earned minor reputation for being a "Latin" rapper, but he took the direction to rap about his Mexican American heritage. "La Raza" marks the first single ever that a rapper of Mexican American heritage had mainstream success and he truly put us on the map at the time. Afterward it would spawn a 'golden era' in this new emerging 'Chicano rap" subgenre, you had Proper Dos, Funky Aztecs, 2 Brown, Aztec Tribe, Knightowl, Mr. Lil One, Lil Rob, SPM, N2Deep, Cypress Hill, Ese Rich Roc, etc. etc. etc. An incredible time for the Chicano Rap scene.
Then as the new millennium came a great shift happened. Not sure exactly what but the music started getting whack. Gangster music pretty much fell out of style and thats what Chicano rap became the centerfold of, even though originally Chicano rap was about representing La Raza, and talking about real life. It became kind of a parody to what gangster rap used to be, and just really lame. All these fakes trying to "out gangster" eachother talking about the same things in every single track, the beats got lame they no longer sampled from G-Funk and oldies but tried hard to mimick the sound of mainstream rap but with little production quality which just made it sound like a joke.
These days King Lil G and Krypto are tearing it up, we have a new generation of Xicano rappers putting it down but its not as many as it used to be. A lot of people think this subgenre is dying. Apparently King Lil G was signed to Eminem's Shady Records so I don't know what that means for Chicano rap but its good for him anyway. Huero Snipes and OG Spanish Fly two known friends who have worked together are apparently beefing now but many say its artificial beef, FAKE, so they can sell more records and apparently it's working for them. You have guys like Thief Siccario, Baldacci, Duende, and others earning a reputation for genuinely good rap skills.
Who knows where the game goes from here.
Anybody like this kind of music?
