It's because Yanks don't know what real food tastes like so when they eat natural, organic meals - it doesn't compute. Where as back at home, the sugar content is so high that they crave it in all meals.
This obviously isn't just a Yank thing, many 1st world countries have too much sugar in most of their foods. But older countries who have national dishes tend to resort to natural ingredients, the national dish of Yankland is a burger.

huh?
One thing that it isn't is bland.
Too many countries too many cuisines for any of it to be bland.

You find them drinking their tinny coffee and smoking their 10 packs of cigarettes a day.

I live in California as well and have traveled extensively throughout Europe. If your using Italy as a baseline for some awesome food, then that's where you are going wrong. They have great food, don't get me wrong, but the food can be different depending on what city you are in. For example, in Rome you really need to get out of Central (ancient) Rome in order to find some great food. Maybe you're just stuck in tourist traps. Eating in or around Piazza Navona isnt the way to go.
But more importantly, maybe you should try France and better yet Spain for some of the very best food you'll find anywhere in the world. You'll have to try really hard to get a bad meal in Barcelona. In my opinion, best food city in the world. Beats Paris, NYC, San Francisco / Napa hands down.
