    [PLEASE HELP] Why is the USA Spying on it's Friends and Allies?

    Intelligence is apart of national security and I understand that.

    But you are meant to bug and spy against the enemy not your allies.

    What is the deal with the good old USA spying on its friends?

    Listening in on Spanish phone conversations, bugging the German and Brazilian premiers as well as a host of other supposedly friendly countries

    Doesn't this undermine the trust between the countries and the USA

    The US is trying to get the christmas shopping done early and needs to secretly figure out what they want so it can be a surprise.

      plus how embarrassing would it be for the US to give the exact same sweater that the UK got from Germany

        Exactly. To have Italy smile in a patently false manner and say "I love it" when it's obvious they hate it would be a diplomatic catastrophe the likes of which we haven't seen since the Iran-Walmart Gift Card affair of 1988.
