Like 2 to 3 thousand years ago or better, ancient times. Read the Greek through Roman accounts of Africa/Africans.
To be fair, that's when other Empires were bragging on Africa Empires like Ethiopia or Carthage, I am not sure when Africa started to fall behind the Europeans in technology, wealth, or power, but I can say with a lot of certainty the Greeks and Romans respected and even feared them.
That said, all this stuff about IQ and missiles and stuff doesn't have anything to do with the time Africa was powerful. Maybe to do with the decline, but I'm pretty sure that's more the scramble for Africa. I don't know though.
I've told y'all before the list of ancient boxing books is short and the info is skint. To cobble my lists and articles together I had to go to ancient history books that dealt with ancient society in more general terms and look for the boxing bits. Things like Descriptions of Greece and such is where I picked up Africa was once powerful.
I'd go as far to say Ancient Greeks had a boner for Ancient Ethiopians ... Andromeda wasn't written the way it is written because they were going for some Wakanda bull. They respected the African empires like that legitimately.
