    This is ModDB's 6th year in throwing the Mod of the Year Awards, a prestigious event where people from any background can be rewarded for their hard work in making some truly great gaming experiences.

    If you don't know what a game modification is, you might want to read up on this article. ModDB is already accepting submissions for mods for any console (which is great for those who are aware of Epic's latest move to support the modding community.

    As always, this year's winners were decided by public voting in each of three categories - indie games, unreleased and released mods. It was a very close race to the number one spot this year. Regardless, every one of the winners showcased deserve the attention. Without the effort, enthusiasm and dedication behind these projects, 2007 would have been a tough year to try and play something different.

    Top 5 Released Mods

    1. Insurgency: Half-Life 2
    Insurgency slips you into the role of a modern combatant in this multiplayer combat mod, engaging in military operations all across the world in both fictional and real-life conflicts. Players will need to utilize tactics and their squad mates to survive.

    2. Project Reality: Battlefield 2
    Project Reality, just like the title suggests, focuses on bringing realism to the forefront of EA's multiplayer online game by introducing physics, visual effects, new playable factions and realistic weaponry designed by real armed services veterans!

    3. Empires: Half-Life 2
    Empires is a RTS FPS hybrid multiplayer game, where two teams fight for supremacy in a never-ending war. One player in each team takes the role of commander, building and harvesting resources while the rest take to the battlefield FPS style!

    4. Forgotten Hope 2: Battlefield 2
    A remake of the popular mod for Battlefield 1942, Forgotten Hope 2 is a World War 2 mod that features an arsenal of over 250 pieces of true-life equipment, destructible environments and a focus on cover and concealment to survive.

    5. MINERVA: Half-Life 2
    Caught in the clutches of a rogue artificial intelligence, you must make a desperate strike against the Combine if you are to survive. MINERVA is a single-player modification that features some of the best map work since Half-Life 2 itself!

    Top 5 Released Indie Games

    1. BSG - Beyond the Red Line
    BSG: Beyond the Red Line is an open source, space flight simulator powered by the SCP enhanced Freespace 2 engine. This standalone modification is set in Ron D. Moore's Re-imagined Battlestar Galactica universe.

    2. Red Alert - A Path Beyond
    Remember 1996's Command & Conquer: Red Alert? Now, enter the fray as a single combatant on the battlefield, fighting alongside the Allies or the Soviets for global supremacy in this mod that adheres to the classic world created by Westwood Studios.

    3. Warsow
    Warsow is a high-speed standalone deathmatch mod that utilizes a heavily modified version of the Quake 2 engine. Combined with cell shaded graphics and an emphasis on movement and jumping tricks, Warsow is one of the most frenetic mods you'll ever play.

    4. World of Padman
    Another Mod DB favorite, World of Padman is a visually astounding paintball frag fest that spins the classic deathmatch formula on its ear. Forget blood and gibs! Where else can you battle it out as a 3-inch high superhero in a video game store?

    5. Tremulous
    Tremulous is an open-source multiplayer mod where humans and aliens face off in a sci-fi battle to the death. The game is a mixture of FPS and RTS elements, featuring build-able structures and upgrades in addition to straight-forward fragging!

    1. Zombie Panic - Source: Half-Life 2
    Zombies and humans once again battle it out in this Half-Life 2 multiplayer game, where players take on the roles of both the zombies and the humans. While a zombie can respawn indefinitely, a human can only die once, making it every man for himself...

    2. Jurassic Park: Crysis
    Since the beginning of time. Man has searched the earth for evidence of its past. But while some have looked for clues to the mystery; One man has found the way to bring the mystery back to life. Here on this private island, science has defied evolution.

    3. Barney's Tales: Half-Life 2
    Aiming to bring back the classic Blue Shift storyline, Barneys Tales will introduce a variety of new features to the old formula, such as: authentic weapon feedback, new chapters to play through, realistic weapons character uniforms and more!

    4. MechWarrior - Living Legends: Crysis
    MWLL is at its very core a mix between a FPS and a Simulation. This will be achieved through the use of a mixed arms massively multiplayer gaming experience where the player takes part in a battle using a variety of vehicles and weapons.

    5. Operation Black Mesa: Half-Life 2
    Prepare to experience Half-Life: Opposing Force once again in Operation: Black Mesa, a Source remake that boasts a true return to form for one of the best expansion packs ever made. The full release will include both the single and multiplayer portion.
