I think we definately need one of these threads in this training and nutrition forum. To inform people of quality boxing gear and to steer those away from subpar trainig equipment. Whose with me?

And I haven't tried enough to say what's good.
the good ones are the "pro-training" gloves by everlast.
when it comes to boxing equipment, you get what you pay for.
i suggest staying away from equipment at local sports stores (like Big 5, wal-mart). most of the time their stuff don't provide enough safety.Last edited by deh707; 09-07-2006, 04:19 PM.

Pro Mex training gloves- Suck, though i hear theyre pretty accurate recreations of Reyes gloves. Dont care for them.
IMF tech training gloves- Awesome protection, though the wrist protection is wearing out a little. A little too bulky as well.
KOFightGear sparring gloves- 16oz gloves look like 12oz amateur competition gloves, high quality and cheap but they dont have good wrist support.

IMF tech 16 oz training gloves - best protection, but i dont recommend them for sparring, the striking surface is hard.
top contender 14 oz supersoft training gloves - cheap, soft, safe, but made of synthetic leather, and the person using the gloves, can't "feel" the punch when they hit something, because of the extra thick 3.5 inch open-cell foam.
everlast 12oz. "high performance" training glove - not good, purchased at big 5, no protection, stinks fast.
century 12oz. training gloves - (got it at big 5), no good, no wrist support, all the padding is on the top, unbalanced.
everlast 180 inch mexican style handwraps - good.

i have a pair, and it has good knuckle protection, but the wrist protection is horrible.
when using the glove wraps, it's hard to put on some gloves.
i would only use them for the speed bag, nothing beats the old school handwraps.

First off, this is a damn good idea for a thread that should be stickied.
I have been boxing for some time now and I have come to the simple conclusion that yes, you do get what you pay for. If you're looking for high quality gear, those $30 Everlast gloves you can get at Walmart aren't for you. Going to a martial arts store (if you have one in the area), a local gym, or the internet are the best ways to get quality gear.
When it comes to gloves and hand wraps, I use the brand Century. They offer high quality gear for not an arm and a leg in price. Another big brand in the business is Title Boxing. They offer great quality products at average prices. As for professional style gloves, Grant Boxing, which provides gloves for several professional fighters, such as Evander Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr., Winky Wright and Antonio Tarver amongst others, offers arguably the best quality gloves in the world for a more expensive price (anywhere from $85 on up).

Honestly though, when it came to me hitting the heavy bag, I would wear them under my 12 or 10 oz. gloves, and when I would put together solid jabs and combinations, the gloves would push the Everlast Glove Wraps into my knuckles, causing annoying cuts and sc****s along them at first. After a while of using them though, this problem was overcome, and I have no problem with them; I think they are a great product. For the 24.99 that most retailers sell them for, it can be a time-saving alternative instead of having to use individual hand wraps under your gloves before you train.
That being said, I hope that answers some questions.Last edited by BodyHead Banger; 09-07-2006, 11:24 PM.
