Having a good gym. If they are good you'll be good and progress much faster. Everyone dives into depression when they get a beating and think abt quitting the sport. Especially people quit right after their first sparring sessions or decide to go on. Bcz it feels like you are paddling on a rock when the techniques you've been training for months doesn't work, but happens to everyone.
Some legends were also started in pretty late age, like Sergio Martinez, he was 19 I think.
I don't like sounding romantic but passion is truly important. People just learn what they love significantly better and faster than others. If you really stick with it like a nerd by the age 24 (or say 25, you won't make money anyway in amateurs, why the rush?) you can already compete pretty well with others and participate in tournaments if you want it. I never been in a tournament to give advice on it but if the guys in your gym are good and you can cope up with them you'll know you can join a tournament.
Don't train like Rocky, don't break your body down day by day with hard training but do smart and sweet training.
