the teaching method is "do this"

      you cant "do this"

      "keep trying"

Being too stiff and tensing the muscles too early in the punch is the hardest thing to avoid, I think. Staying relaxed is counter-intuitive to how we naturally think fighting is done

Here are a few of the typical mistakes that limit punching power.
            1. Lack of full extension of your arms and shoulders when landing straight punches.
            2. Lack proper hip extension/rotation.
            3. Too much tension in your body. Think of a whip its loose up until the point it makes contact. Yes it's an oversimplification, but you should realize that if you're too tense you won't be able to get full extension, rotation, and power to whatever you're aiming to hit.
            4. Lack of technique.
            5. Lack of timing.
            6. Lack of using your opponents momentum to your advantage.
            7. Pushing your punches instead of snapping your punches.
            8. Lack of proper footwork. If your base is off your punches will lack power in most cases.
            9. Not rotating with your body or putting your body behind your hooks.
