    My first match (video)

Back in July I was asking people here for advice about an upcoming "sparring competition"- 2 half rounds with headgear. This was my first time at anything resembling a real match.

I finally got the DVD today so I've uploaded my match.
    I'm in the black headgear.

As always I'd be grateful for any advice. I feel like my mind went blank during the fight and I wasn't thinking about boxing techniques, but it seemed like all the training took over. So perhaps advice should be about what I should focus on in training, rather than what I should've done in the match.

After the match, all I remember is doing well in the first round, but then getting really really tired at the end. I was shocked at how tired I was because I thought 2 half rounds wouldn't be a problem, but I guess a real fight is totally different to practice. I also had a cold and hadn't trained a week prior to this match.

But upon watching the video, it seemed that the 2nd round wasn't as bad as I remembered. I got hit a lot, but I also hit him back with some good punches, and I don't think he dominated me in the 2nd round in any way.

Thanks for watching, and thanks to all the guys here who gave me some great advice leading up to this fight.

Ok, nice job for first fight type of thing.

You are crowding your jab and right hands by being on your guys chest. Back out a bit and work that jab, when it starts landing bring in the right hands like you did. But, instead of backing out every time after a right hand why don't you just bring a hook behind the right hands.

Boxing is straight out endurance. Now that you've seen what 1 full round is you'll want to make adjustments with your training to compensate. Lots of rope, working fast and diligently. Spar-spar-and spar some more, then spar 1 more round. Always get your heavy bag work in.

Not bad for a new guy. You kept your cool but weren't relaxed in there yet. Time will take care of that for you as long as you are consistently getting in there to mix with guys. Once you learn to relax a bit you will be able to use your eyes, first to see what the guy is doing, then you'll use them to start plotting your offense.

    Good job my man!

      Nice Pressure!

One thing I noticed is you kind of...how do you say...toss your punches. I feel that you aren't throwing everything into them like when punching a bag. This is commonly from low confidence in punch accuracy. Don't be scared to miss. Pretend that guy is the heavy bag. If you miss you won't get ktfo as long as you protect yourself properly ie bringing the shoulder up to protect the chin.

      Just my thoughts.

You seem to walk right into punching range before throwing. Do a lot of skipping and work on your footwork so you can move in and out with your shots.
