    Boxing as self defense ?

    Hi

I started boxing two times a week in a gym , with at least one time sparring , also runs every Saturday and boxing on heavy bag 15 rounds at home.
Im Boxing simply to learn to defend myself and get in better shape . Is it enough to be at te gym two times a week , if you want it ? I spar mostly with guys who lighter than me. Im the they are typically 10-20 kg lighter than me.

If you take it seriously yes. I'd start sparring with heavier guys though when you're ready. If you only spar with guys you have the advantage over then you'll be in for a rude awakening when you don't have the advantage.

    P.S.

Go to the body, it will save your hands. You never know who can take a punch from damn near anyone. 99% of the general public is going down from a good body shot.

If you are in "bad" shape and want to get better shape with boxing I´m surprised that you last 15 rounds on the bag as a rookie. Well done!

Anyway Boxing is a great self defence foundation and if you mostly do it for self defence then maybe do krav **** parallel to boxing.

It is just super beneficial to know how to defend against knife attacks or when someone points a gun at your.

And if you are serious about boxing as a sport then I would go more often to the gym.
Train your punches, technique and defence with just 2 times a week there is simply not enough time to get better.

disclaimer: I'm not as experienced as some guys on this forum, but have a year and a half experience

given the above however, I have noticed that since I have been boxing I have gained a lot of calmness in difficult situations which could have escalated into fights outside the gym.

So while I havent been called on to defend myself physically since I started, Im pretty sure I have avoided confrontations simply by staying calm, carrying myself in a more confident way and not showing fear.

I cannot be sure but I put this down to sparring regularly and getting over my fear of being hit.

And avoidance is by far the best strategy. No matter how much you train, you dont know what their background is, how many friends they have nearby, what weapon they might have in their back pocket

But so far the mental benefits have far outweighed the physical.

          ^That's a good point.

Beyond that, boxing is an excellent means of self defense! It is after all..a combat art.. you get out of boxing what you put into it. 2-3 times a week training should give you the edge you want over Joe schmoe. Fact is most guys don't have any formal combat training....you will have an advantage in most situations.

I have gotten out of countless fights and not all were one on one (I'm 6'5 too so that helps). Your confidence can be scary especially if it's a guy just trying to pump his ego up. I've found that when someone wants to start **** with you and you grin and kind of get excited for it, they change their tune pretty quick. You need to be careful who you do that to though as it could backfire.

Boxing is great if its hand to hand. Most people that start fights aren't trained in a martial art because martial arts teach self control. If weapons are involved, there really is no good hand to hand combat that can save you aside from ones that train specifically for that.

                Thanks for the reply guys.

I am studying ar Night every monday, then i have 25 hours work spread across the week, and then i am studying again 20 hours a week. So with a job, two educations, Its hard to get that much boxing. All i wanna do is to defend myself probaly and, workout. I am boxing atleast once a week at the gym, and Maximum 3. And allways hit the bags at home once.

Do you Think with like 1-2 boxing sessions at the gym, that i can learn to defend myself.

It depends, defend yourself against what/who? In general, an athletic (in shape) male of regular size should be able to stand his own against most people out there. Not many people live a healthy lifestyle today yet alone practice a combat sport and the kind of people that pick fights on the street are usually drunk. So just working out and doing strenght exercises should give you a big advantage.

Otherwise 1-2 sessions a week can give you basic boxing knowledge in time, in few months you'll probably know how to throw a one-two, you won't master it but at least you'll feel somewhat comfortable doing it. Maybe you'll spar a bit (depends on the gym and coach) which can prepare you mentally for confrontations.

Boxing is probably the best for quick "self defence" because you'll learn something useful in the first few months. Brazilian jiu jiutsu for example is promoted these days a lot and I'd recommend it too but it takes a lot of time to really know what you're doing. Boxing is difficult to master too, but at least you'll learn how to punch and develop some power soon, even if your boxing isn't 100% technically sound yet. Sparring also helps to get used to getting hit so you don't panic if someone smacks you on the street.
